49 Days [Ep. 20 Final]

They actually killed her.

They actually KILLED HER.

THEY ACTUALLY KILLED HER!!!

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! T_T THEY ACTUALLY KILLED HER!!!!!!! WHY DID THEY KILL HER?! WHAT KIND OF CRUEL DRAMA DOES THIS TO MEEEEEEEEEEEE?!

*cough*

Yes. I’ve gotten that out.

…Wait, not quite.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Ahem. Okay. Now I’m done.

So, this wasn’t an ending I was expecting at ALL. I mean, PHEW! It went off in a completely different direction than I thought.

I mean, the whole show has been about Ji-hyun getting those three tears so that she can live again. Then it turns out she dies anyways, EVEN THOUGH SHE GOT THE THREE FREAKING TEARS! What kind of messed up show is this?!

Granted, it was well written, and left me bittersweet.

Upon waking up, Scheduler told Ji-hyun that she was scheduled to die in six days’ time, as was written when she was born. Because she was able to attain three tears and come back to life, only to die right after, the “higher ups” (God, maybe?) decided to give her the choice to keep her memory of the 47 days, or not. Ah, that explains why. And as I thought, it did, indeed spell bad news.

I mean, when, in episode 19, she said that she’ll die soon, I thought it was, like, gonna be metaphorical or something. Or, if not, then they would somehow be able to prevent it. I mean, the whole point of the drama was for her to live!

But that didn’t happen. And that’s also why she pretended to not remember Kang, so that he wouldn’t be so heartbroken when she died. Too late for that, dear. But I’m really happy for the fact that she couldn’t pretend to not know her “unni,” Yi-kyung. That warms my heart. Even so, Yi-kyung still tells Kang, even though asked not to. It’s so sad to see how desperate Kang is to save her. “The thing I hoped for the most was for Ji-hyun to live. Isn’t there something like that? It’s okay if I never get to see her again—she just has to live!” Waaaaaaah Kang-aaaaaaaaaah!!!!

The following days, she wraps up everything, spending her precious time with her parents. Oh, how heartbroken will they be when she dies for real this time? Her last words to them both? “I was so happy to be your daughter.” NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

‘Cuz, you know what happens practically seconds later? She gets a sharp pain in her stomach, falls to the ground, and DIES. Just like that. How cruel is that?!

And that’s only the middle of the episode! I still had to go through thirty minutes more! But it’s thirty minutes that I’m glad were there, ‘cuz it wrapped up the drama quite nicely.

We find out that Ji-hyun’s third tear wasn’t actually Yi-kyung’s. Turns out it was In-jung’s. HUH? I was right? That small little niggle in the back of my mind was actually right? Huh. I’m better than I thought. Seems In-jung was having second thoughts about everything, and finally realized that Ji-hyun would always be her friend, and any resentment In-jung had towards her was her own fault. Glad to see you cutting the ties with Min-ho, not the other way around.

Then another bomb is dropped. Turns out Ji-hyun had an unni who was kidnapped as a child, and was never found again. Can you guess where this is going? Yep. Turns out it’s Yi-kyung. How convenient. A little too convenient, for my taste. Eh. I’ll let it slide, just ‘cuz I’m so happy for Yi-kyung, finally having a family. I mean, LOOK!

I’m seriously really happy that not only does Yi-kyung get a family, but that though Mom and Dad lost one daughter, they were able to find their other. So, in a way, they help each other overcome the loss of Ji-hyun.

And that also explains why Yi-kyung’s tear wasn’t one of the three- she’s family, and family doesn’t count. But I bet if she wasn’t, it would have been one of them. I also find it ironic that all throughout the drama, Ji-hyun was calling Yi-kyung “unni,” when it turns out Yi-kyung really was her unni. And she never got to find that out. So sad.

We fast forward two years later, and the last scene is Kang and Yi-kyung standing in front of two trees. One represents Ji-hyun, which Kang is standing in front of, anf the other represents Yi-soo, which Yi-kyung is standing in front of. It’s a nice parallel. Ji-hyun and Yi-soo (a.k.a. Scheduler) were by each other’s side in the afterlife, supporting each other, and Yi-kyung and Kang are by each other side in life now, supporting each other.

It’s such a beautiful ending, though I find it bittersweet. I wish Ji-hyun hadn’t died. Heck, I wish Yi-soo could have come back to life. But that’s not how it ended. It would have been too perfect. So this is the next-best thing.

To end things, here is the last scene, as well as Yi-kyung and Kang’s last thoughts to Ji-hyun and Yi-soo. It’s heartbreaking.

Yi-kyung: Ji-hyun-ah, Han Kang is busy working, and as you requested, he’s been a really good friend to me. Because of your bright personality and your connection to others while you were with me, I was able to adjust well.
Kang: Ji-hyun-ah, though people know they’re going to die, they live as if they aren’t. Because of your 49 days, I’m living my life as if it’s 49 days. Because I saw things change that never would have happened, if you hadn’t known when you’d die. Here lie the two most important people in our lives.
Yi-kyung: Here are the two people who changed our lives and left beautifully.
Kang: Because of the 49 days’ journey that we were on with these two
Yi-kyung: We live today as if it’s precious, and our last.
Kang: Ji-hyun, because I met you
Yi-kyung: Yi-soo, because I met you
Kang: I was happy.
Yi-kyung: I was happy.

49 Days [Ep. 19]

I’m reeling in shock right now. It’s the second-to-last episode, and yet they still manage to fit in another twist. Why are these people so good at writing?!

So, Ji-hyun woke up, FINALLY! Mom and Seo-woo are still crying their eyes out from being told by the doctor to let her go, so it’s not until Dad arrives that they see she’s awake. It’s so heartwarming and a HUUUUUGE sigh of relief to see the family, plus Seo-woo so happy. I love Seo-woo sooooo much right now. She’s pretty much like a sister to Ji-hyun, the way all four of them are together, so happy to have Ji-hyun back.

Back with Yi-kyung, she leaves, thinking Ji-hyun died, and therefore has nothing left to do. Kang comes back only to be told that he might have miscalculated the date (well, FINALLY) and Ji-hyun’s already gone. Serves him right for leaving without telling her. But it’s also probably the worst call you could get upon arriving home. He’s quickly updated to the fact the Ji-hyun’s awake again, but when he arrives at the hospital, Ji-hyun has no idea why he’s there.

Uh oh. I was hoping that wouldn’t happen. We were told (through Yi-soo a.k.a. Scheduler to Ji-hyun) that when she wakes up, she won’t remember anything from her spirit days, to keep the secret. I was really hoping that there would be some sort of loophole that wouldn’t make that happen, but I guess not. HEARTBREAK! Kang’s crushing disappointment tugs at my heartstrings. Now he’s gotta start all over again and make her fall in love with him again. DX Poor guy.

Wait… That means that she doesn’t remember about Min-ho and In-jung. Yipes. Good thing everyone else found out, so she won’t be marrying him, or staying friends with her. Sure enough, she asks for them almost immediately. In-jung is, naturally afraid to go. I guess she doesn’t know that Ji-hyun doesn’t remember. I hope it stays that way for a while.

But that also means that any growth she went through during those 47 days are for naught, ‘cuz she’s back in the same place as she was before her accident: naive to a fault. NOOOOOO!!!

So, everything falls apart for Min-ho, ending up with his arrest. About time. Before he’s arrested, though he goes to see his mom, who’s in a hospital. I think she’s mentally disabled or something, ‘cuz she’s stuck in the past. The way she talks to him makes him break down crying. I actually pity the guy. He’s emotionally vulnerable, and it’s conveyed so well. I don’t like Min-ho, but man, this face is hard to deal with:

We finally get a wrap on Yi-kyung and Yi-soo’s relationship. I was wondering how they would deal with it, what with Yi-soo being dead an’ all. He became the Scheduler so that he could get one wish granted, and he finally gets it: to meet Yi-kyung face-to-face. To what, I’m not entirely sure. But it’s so sweet I think I’ll melt.

He stays with her for two days, and they do all the things they couldn’t do when he was alive, like go to the amusement park.

But we know something bad is gonna happen, ‘cuz when she’s asleep, he just watches her, as if memorizing her face. Does that mean you’re gonna say goodbye? T_T

And sure enough, the next day he drops the bomb. In order for him to move on and be happy in the next life, he needs to let go of her, and she needs to let go of him, so that she can move on. Otherwise he won’t be happy in the next life. And he tells her that. We all knew this was inevitable, but it’s so heartbreaking to see it actually happen.

Bittersweet, if anything.

And completely and utterly sad. Buckets-of-tears sad.

Now Yi-kyung’s finally alone. I would root for her to go see Ji-hyun, except Ji-hyun won’t remember her, and Kang told her, too. But she goes anyways, turning away when she remembers that fact. Nooooo more heartbreaking! The only person Yi-kyung had was Ji-hyun. I really wanted them to have a beautiful friendship. Well, maybe Yi-kyung will get close to her again, and become close friends like that. That would be nice.

Ji-kyung comes out just as Yi-kyung leaving, and upon seeing her, cries out, “Unni!”

Omo. Is it what I think it is?! DOES SHE REMEMBER HER?!

I have never been so happy in my LIFE! It’s heartbreaking enough that she doesn’t remember Kang, but at least she remember Yi-kyung. Maybe the fact they they were sharing a body has something to do with it?

Or maybe it’s something else… Maybe Ji-hyun really does remember Kang, and just isn’t letting on. Yi-kyung questions this, and it’s confirmed: Ji-hyun does remember Kang. But why lie?

Her answer? “Because I’m going to die again soon.”

What now?

Waitwaitwaitwaitwait. WHAT NOW?!

What the hell does she mean?! I’m totally astounded that they still managed to surprise us, with only one episode to go. I was NOT expecting that at ALL.

Dammit, why is it so damn good until the very end? A lot of times the ending ruins an excellent drama, or the end is so obvious that when it does end, we already knew what was going to happen. But THIS? This is unbelievable. Just unbelievable.

I’m savoring this last episode. I was planning on waiting until tomorrow to watch it, but I can’t wait that long. I’ll be watching it veeeeery soon.

Dammit, why so good, Show?

But wait– why does she still remember, when we were clearly told that she wouldn’t? Uh oh… I’ve got a bad feeling about this…

49 Days [Ep. 18]

Hold on a moment, I can’t see the screen through my tears. *sniffles*

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!

I am trying to savor the last episodes of this drama! Why is it demanding that I just watch ’em all at once?!

So, the countdown is on, and there are only three days left of the 49 days Ji-hyun was given to find those three tears. And she only has one of those three. things aren’t looking so good. Is she really never gonna get her tears, and actually end up dying? That’s a direction I was not counting on at ALL. O_O

What’s worse, Han-kang thinks she still has five days (because logically, that’s how it should be, if she Ji-hyun hadn’t sacrificed two of her days to 1) let her touch one object one time, and 2) have Yi-kyung forget a day of her life (‘cuz she woke up when Ji-hyun was still posessing her body). So he leaves for the US to try and get an investment from his dad to save Ji-hyun’s parents’ company, saying he’ll be back in two days’ time. Which means she’ll be gone when he gets back (since he leaves the next day). And, of course, she doesn’t find out until after he’s gone NOOOOOO!!! Can a drama be this cruel? Oh wait, yes it can.

At some point, Ji-hyun-in-Yi-kyung’s-body buys a cake for her parents’ anniversary, and in her hospital room, she sings to her parents in her spirit form, like she always used to when she was still physically alive. Guh. That made me cry. T_T It also touches Yi-kyung, too (remember, she can see Ji-hyun), who, on top of that, sees Ji-hyung’s real body lying on the bed, covered in tubes, for the first time. And she cries! SHE CRIED! DAMMIT, THAT HAS TO BE THE SECOND TEAR!!!

But, no, it’s not, since no tear appears in Ji-hyun’s necklace. Dammit, I was so sure that Yi-kyung’s tear would be one of them. Maybe at a later date?

Ji-hyun spends her last days reminiscing and contemplating life in general, taking notice in the small things around her. She also says her last goodbyes to everyone (mentally, though).

Then the Last Day. She’s got seven hours to go, but she wants to get it over with, because there’s nothing left for her to do. NOOOO!!! You’ve got seven hours! Maybe someone will cry for you in those seven hours!

Yi-kyung wakes up that day realizing that Ji-hyun’s gone. She freaks out. Awwww, does that means she grew attached to Ji-hyun, too? She cries when she reads a note Ji-hyun left her, along with a small present.

…Is this? Oh please, let this be it! PLEASE!

YESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYES YEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!

It is! Just as Scheduler is about to call the Elevator to take Ji-hyun away, her necklace flashes, and a tear appears. Then, shockingly, it flashes again, and a THIRD tear appears.

OMG. She got three tears. And damn well in time, too. Both of them are completely shocked. Ji-hyun, probably because she thought there wasn’t anyone else who truly loved her. Scheduler, probably because no one else has ever been able to accomplish their task before.

But who was the third tear from?

Let’s rewind to the hospital. The doctor tells Mom and Seo-woo to give up on Ji-hyun, know their situation. Ji-hyun will never wake up, and they need to let her go. Basically, pull the plug. This just about does it in for them and Mom cries, clinging to her daughter. And Seo-woo for the first time in the WHOLE drama, cries her eyes out.

Yep, the third tear was Seo-woo’s. I KNEW IT! I’m really glad that Yi-kyung’s was one, too. It shows just how close they’ve become.

know I was keeping In-jung and Min-ho in the back of my mind, but those choices went out the window with this one, especially when In-jung pretty much tried to kill Ji-hyun by pulling her off her respirator (though Kang stopped her just in time) so that she would be able to get Min-ho (who was still infatuated with Yi-kyung and Ji-hyun both). How could she try and kill her own friend?! I know Min-ho told her to, if she ever wanted his affections back (that’s what told me there was no when in hell in would be Min-ho, and I’m glad that when he found out that In-jung actually tried to, he staggered from the shock), but REALLY. How could she? A friendship that lasted for TEN YEARS, versus a five year “relationship” with a guy who doesn’t seem to love you anymore. Did she think she was too far gone?

Back to the story.

So, she’s got her three tears. You know what that means:

SHE’S AWAKE! OH GOD SHE’S AWAKE!

THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU!!!

Now we’ve got two episodes to go. What will happen? I have absolutely no idea, but I am looking forward to it.

I can breath a sigh of relief, while water leaks from the holes in my face, threatening to leave me with a puffy face tomorrow morning.

49 Days [Ep. 15-17]

Damn. I couldn’t stop watching them. I meant to just watch one, but I had to know what happened next. Even now I’m holding myself back from watching another one.

So, stuff happens, people find stuff out, people freak out, people break down, people make plans. It’s all very exciting, really.

So, yeah. During the course of these three episodes, finally all of our main cast has found out the Ji-hyun is in Yi-kyung’s body. That makes for some confusing times.

We also find out what the Scheduler’s relationship was with Yi-kyung before he became the Scheduler. And really, it’s heartbreaking. He’s heartbroken to realize why he’s in this job in the first place, what he did to Yi-kyung, how he died without resolving it. Makes me cry, too, to see his pain. I mean, look! doesn’t that face just tug at your heartstrings?

It’s even more heartbreaking when we find out he died on his way back to PROPOSE (that’s right) to Yi-kyung. Fate is cruel, sometimes.

We get more in depth explanations of what their relationship was, and boy, do I love those moments. We get to see Yi-kyung be more like, well, Ji-hyun. At least, more high-spirited and happy. I know that the same actress plays yikyung and Ji-hyun-in-Yi-kyung’s-body (duh) but we know that this is the real Yi-kyung, not Ji-hyun in her body. They make such a pretty and cute couple. I really hope that they can reunite before the drama finishes. ‘Cuz if they don’t, that’ll be just plain TRAGIC.

And, of course, I love the growing relationship between Yi-kyung and Ji-hyun. Now that Yi-kyung knows the whole story, they’re relationship grew so much! And how great is it that she can see and hear Ji-hyun now, though no one else can? Makes me very happy that Ji-hyun finally has a girlfriend (kinda, sorta) she can talk to who can talk back to her. I love the explanation Scheduler gave Ji-hyun: Yi-kyung’s heart is pure, and the two women are compatible souls.

Also, you gotta love when the bad guy- in this case, Min-ho, gets all riled up. Especially when it’s because of a girl- or rather, in his case, two. He also notes something that I couldn’t help but be happy about: Yi-kyung and Ji-hyun are, in fact, quite similar. I’m happy to see him suffering. I don’t know why, but I get a lot of satisfaction in him finally having to admit that both women are playing with him (though I doubt Yi-kyung meant to do that; Ji-hyun did, of course) but can’t do anything about it, ‘cuz he likes one of them. And the cherry on top? He doesn’t know which one he likes, ‘cuz they’re so similar (according to him, that is). He’s gotta be very frustrated with himself. If it’s Ji-hyun-in-Yi-kyung’s-body that he likes, that’s pretty much the same as him liking her. And to think, he’d been faking his feelings for her before to take everything from her, only to fall in love with her in the end. Karma’s a b***h. What can I say? Heh. I’m happy. =D

So, there are only three episodes left, and I’m going to savor them. Who knows what’s going to happen. The fact that everyone found out before the end makes everything so exciting. What’s going to happen next? I have absolutely no idea. We can’t forget that Ji-hyun still has to get two more tears (and she finally figured out that her first tear was from Kang. >.<), and she only has 6 days to do that. Crapcrapcrap. Otoke?! What to do?! I’m starting to think that maybe (just maybe!) one of those tears will be Yi-kyung’s. And from the developments so far, can I be so bold as to think that maybe Min-ho might have one, after all? For a while I was think that In-jun would, since she seemed to go through some growing process, but she went back to be the back-stabbing friend. I’m keeping Min-ho ad In-jung in the back of my mind, just in case, though. But that last tear… Who in the world could it be?! Seo-woo is a very possible candidate, but I haven’t seen too much of her in the drama so far. She’s there, ad we know it, but she doesn’t get very many scenes. So I’m not really positive when it comes to her.

So…

WHO?!

I guess I gotta wait to find out. *sigh*

49 Days [Ep. 1-14]

“Do you have three people who truly love you?”

This is the main theme of 49 Days. And to be honest, it’s a really interesting and deep question I think we all need to face. Needless to say, I think it made for a beautiful storyline.

The first day I started watching it, I couldn’t stop. I think I watch five or six episodes in a row. And the next day the same. It’s that good.

I really like that it incorporates something spiritual into the theme. Ji-hyun died when it wasn’t her time, so she was given a chance to try and come back to life. However, three people had to cry sincere tears for her. It was a nice touch when they mention that not all tears are sincere, “pure” tears. There are tears of pity, courtesy, self-consolation and so on.

Ji-hyun started out a very naive girl, who had no real idea who the people around her really were. She figured that it would be easy to get those three tears. She says “I only have to get three?” but as Jun Il-woo said, I think the real question is, “I have to get that many?” Food for thought. Who would cry pure, sincere tears for you?

Back to Ji-hyun. She grows so much in the course of the drama. At the beginning, all the thought about was how to get the three tears. But she starts learning more about the woman who’s body she’s possessing, Song Yi-kyung, and eventually grows attached to her, wanting to help the depressed woman. And also realizing that she can’t really do anything in death to find those three tears. What she did while still alive will determine if she gets the three tears.

Something to think about for us, too. What we do in our lives will affect whatever happens in the next world.

I’ve enjoyed all the episodes up until now, and I’m probably going to finish it before the end of next week, if not sooner. All the characters are somehow intertwined in the most intricate and subtle manner. Very well written, I must say, and a must see. I look forward to finishing it!
