They actually killed her.
They actually KILLED HER.
THEY ACTUALLY KILLED HER!!!
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! T_T THEY ACTUALLY KILLED HER!!!!!!! WHY DID THEY KILL HER?! WHAT KIND OF CRUEL DRAMA DOES THIS TO MEEEEEEEEEEEE?!
*cough*
Yes. I’ve gotten that out.
…Wait, not quite.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
Ahem. Okay. Now I’m done.
So, this wasn’t an ending I was expecting at ALL. I mean, PHEW! It went off in a completely different direction than I thought.
I mean, the whole show has been about Ji-hyun getting those three tears so that she can live again. Then it turns out she dies anyways, EVEN THOUGH SHE GOT THE THREE FREAKING TEARS! What kind of messed up show is this?!
Granted, it was well written, and left me bittersweet.
Upon waking up, Scheduler told Ji-hyun that she was scheduled to die in six days’ time, as was written when she was born. Because she was able to attain three tears and come back to life, only to die right after, the “higher ups” (God, maybe?) decided to give her the choice to keep her memory of the 47 days, or not. Ah, that explains why. And as I thought, it did, indeed spell bad news.
I mean, when, in episode 19, she said that she’ll die soon, I thought it was, like, gonna be metaphorical or something. Or, if not, then they would somehow be able to prevent it. I mean, the whole point of the drama was for her to live!
But that didn’t happen. And that’s also why she pretended to not remember Kang, so that he wouldn’t be so heartbroken when she died. Too late for that, dear. But I’m really happy for the fact that she couldn’t pretend to not know her “unni,” Yi-kyung. That warms my heart. Even so, Yi-kyung still tells Kang, even though asked not to. It’s so sad to see how desperate Kang is to save her. “The thing I hoped for the most was for Ji-hyun to live. Isn’t there something like that? It’s okay if I never get to see her again—she just has to live!” Waaaaaaah Kang-aaaaaaaaaah!!!!
The following days, she wraps up everything, spending her precious time with her parents. Oh, how heartbroken will they be when she dies for real this time? Her last words to them both? “I was so happy to be your daughter.” NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
‘Cuz, you know what happens practically seconds later? She gets a sharp pain in her stomach, falls to the ground, and DIES. Just like that. How cruel is that?!
And that’s only the middle of the episode! I still had to go through thirty minutes more! But it’s thirty minutes that I’m glad were there, ‘cuz it wrapped up the drama quite nicely.
We find out that Ji-hyun’s third tear wasn’t actually Yi-kyung’s. Turns out it was In-jung’s. HUH? I was right? That small little niggle in the back of my mind was actually right? Huh. I’m better than I thought. Seems In-jung was having second thoughts about everything, and finally realized that Ji-hyun would always be her friend, and any resentment In-jung had towards her was her own fault. Glad to see you cutting the ties with Min-ho, not the other way around.
Then another bomb is dropped. Turns out Ji-hyun had an unni who was kidnapped as a child, and was never found again. Can you guess where this is going? Yep. Turns out it’s Yi-kyung. How convenient. A little too convenient, for my taste. Eh. I’ll let it slide, just ‘cuz I’m so happy for Yi-kyung, finally having a family. I mean, LOOK!
I’m seriously really happy that not only does Yi-kyung get a family, but that though Mom and Dad lost one daughter, they were able to find their other. So, in a way, they help each other overcome the loss of Ji-hyun.
And that also explains why Yi-kyung’s tear wasn’t one of the three- she’s family, and family doesn’t count. But I bet if she wasn’t, it would have been one of them. I also find it ironic that all throughout the drama, Ji-hyun was calling Yi-kyung “unni,” when it turns out Yi-kyung really was her unni. And she never got to find that out. So sad.
We fast forward two years later, and the last scene is Kang and Yi-kyung standing in front of two trees. One represents Ji-hyun, which Kang is standing in front of, anf the other represents Yi-soo, which Yi-kyung is standing in front of. It’s a nice parallel. Ji-hyun and Yi-soo (a.k.a. Scheduler) were by each other’s side in the afterlife, supporting each other, and Yi-kyung and Kang are by each other side in life now, supporting each other.
It’s such a beautiful ending, though I find it bittersweet. I wish Ji-hyun hadn’t died. Heck, I wish Yi-soo could have come back to life. But that’s not how it ended. It would have been too perfect. So this is the next-best thing.
To end things, here is the last scene, as well as Yi-kyung and Kang’s last thoughts to Ji-hyun and Yi-soo. It’s heartbreaking.
Yi-kyung: Ji-hyun-ah, Han Kang is busy working, and as you requested, he’s been a really good friend to me. Because of your bright personality and your connection to others while you were with me, I was able to adjust well.
Kang: Ji-hyun-ah, though people know they’re going to die, they live as if they aren’t. Because of your 49 days, I’m living my life as if it’s 49 days. Because I saw things change that never would have happened, if you hadn’t known when you’d die. Here lie the two most important people in our lives.
Yi-kyung: Here are the two people who changed our lives and left beautifully.
Kang: Because of the 49 days’ journey that we were on with these two
Yi-kyung: We live today as if it’s precious, and our last.
Kang: Ji-hyun, because I met you
Yi-kyung: Yi-soo, because I met you
Kang: I was happy.
Yi-kyung: I was happy.
